Brunch like you’re on vacation in NOLA

Blue Ridge Kitchen’s elevated twist on Southern comfort food hits a high note during weekend brunch (11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday). The menu rotates frequently, but you’ll find the likes of a gussied-up croque madame — with lobster or butter-poached shrimp and a truffle-infused sauce — and a smoked pulled pork or fried green tomato eggs Benedict topped with chipotle hollandaise. Skip the standard mimosa for one of Blue Ridge’s colorful original cocktails (that menu is also constantly changing), and while one can’t go wrong with the classic beignets, the bruleed banana split with toffee cookie crumble should at least give you pause when choosing dessert. Reservations are strongly recommended; if you can, try to snag a table on the sunny patio.

Biggest 2020 Sonoma County Restaurant Openings and Closings

Many survived by pivoting to outdoor service, some debuted, while others shut amid the pandemic.

To say restaurants have had a tough year is an understatement. Ongoing restrictions since March on indoor dining because of the coronavirus pandemic have forced them to reconstruct their business models and increasingly depend on outdoor dining. Then the fires and smoke of recent months made even that a challenge.

Sonoma County’s Best Restaurant Dishes 2020

The pandemic and fires can’t keep a good chef down. Here are the best things we ate this year.

It’s almost cruel to talk about the incredible food I have eaten this year as we begin another pandemic lockdown. Many of these restaurants are closed or only offering takeout, which pales in comparison to the summertime luxury of being able to eat al fresco.

What’s New in Sonoma County 2021

Despite life in Wine Country looking a lot different in 2020, we have been pleased to see a small flurry of business openings. To say that 2020 was a challenge for Sonoma County businesses is an understatement, but if there’s something that is still true about Wine Country this past year and every year, it’s that it is just as enticing today as ever before.

Where to Eat and Drink in Sebastopol

The Sonoma County town is home to some of wine country’s best food

Each town in Sonoma County has its distinct personality — Sonoma with its charming and classic go-to restaurants, Healdsburg with its mix of the fancy and the artsy. A decade ago, Sebastopol, on the other hand, was mainly known for its creative hippie vibe, with Florence Avenue lined with recycled junk art and a killer farmers market.

Blue Ridge Kitchen™

What’s the best season to open a restaurant? The upside of a summertime opening is that it’s typically prime tourist season, and there’s the influx of incoming visitors. The downside is many locals are vacationing, so it’s hard to cultivate a solid group of regulars. But 2020 has been far from usual, and Blue Ridge Kitchen™ seemed to appear overnight, opening this summer in the midst of a national pandemic when indoor dining was shut down. I happened by one Sunday afternoon as I was strolling through The Barlow to see its outdoor dining section humming with business, as if it had been there for years. So on a Wednesday evening in September, Alex and I ventured there to find out how they’re making the magic happen.

Blue Ridge Kitchen™ combines fine dining with comfort

As the server poured silky gazpacho over a chunk of lobster in the bowl before me, I suddenly realized how much I’ve been missing fine dining. After so many months of take-out meals or eating on casual patios, it was so nice to enjoy the upscale service offered at the new Blue Ridge Kitchen™ at the Barlow in Sebastopol.

After my first spoonful of the refreshing soup, I knew chef Matt D’Ambrosi is putting a lot of thought into his Cal-Creole-Cajun recipes. The chilled gazpacho is marvelous on its own, in a sweet-tart, peach-colored puree of melon and tomato dotted with radish, a round of chopped avocado and shiny drops of basil oil ($9). With the generous chunk of seafood (add $7) and the elegant tableside presentation, it’s luxurious.
